Energy bills up 41% in past three years

The average energy bill is 41 per cent higher than in 2008 following the latest price hikes, it has been estimated.

The EDF Energy increase coming into force today, with gas and electricity prices up by 6.5 and 7 per cent respectively, means all of the big six suppliers have pumped up their bills since winter started. The average household is now paying 313 a year more for their energy than three years ago, according to uSwitch.com, which said the 316 difference between the cheapest and most expensive plans available means many homes can claw back the increase. This winter's price hikes have added 63 to the average annual energy bill, taking it to 1,132, said uSwitch.
