aero engine giant Rolls-Royce yesterday announced that chief executive John Rishton is to step down this July, to be succeeded by Warren East, the former head of global semi-conductors designer Arm Holdings.

East left Arm in 2013 after nearly 12 years at the helm in which he is seen as having transformed the group, and joined the Rolls board as a non-executive director in January last year.

The change at the helm comes after a year in which defence spending cuts and falling commodity prices caused Rolls to report its first fall in revenues for a decade. Profits were 8 per cent lower at £1.62 billion in 2014, and Rolls has warned that the figure is unlikely to improve this year.
