Recommended restaurant: Los Cardos, Leith Walk
Ordering happens in a manner of stages, enabling the seemingly short menu to offer a wealth of options. With soft shells, hard shells, and even no shell, this is the first obstacle.
Opting for a burrito with a soft shell filled with rice and black beans, the next choice was filling. With all the usual choices available, I went for the classic chicken. Marinated in a Los Cardos chilli-citrus, the chicken is then grilled and wrapped up in the burrito which is presented in shiny tinfoil.

Hide AdWith delicious creamy sour cream, melted cheese, chunks of chicken and yummy rice and beans in each mouthful, it is a – very much less spicy than authentic – Mexican dream. The citrus from the chicken didn’t quite make it through the other flavours but I can’t say it was hugely missed.
Having convinced my friend to share, we went about selecting our next one, going for the soft burrito again, with a slow-roast pork filling.
The sweet meat combined with the spicy salsa verde was a winner and very moreish.
Struggling slightly to have room for anything more, we passed on the sides, which largely consist of dips and homemade tortilla chips and looked delicious.
Not one for a formal dining occasion, Los Cardos is perfect for a quick, healthy Tex-Mex fix and certainly has the tastiest offerings in this niche in Edinburgh that I have discovered.
