A pensioner has left 2 million to charity in her will. Joan Nimmo-Smith of North Berwick East Lothian, named 13 charities as beneficiaries in her will when she died in April aged 96. Her brother in law, Andrew Nimmo-Smith, of Selkirk, left 250,000 to his cats when he died last year, as well as bequeathing 18th century Haining House to the community.
JK Rowling has won the first Hans Christian Andersen literature prize, created to be awarded to someone who can be compared with the Danish writer. The 60,000 award was presented yesterday at a ceremony in Andersen's home town of Odense, Denmark.
