FIFTEEN dedicated Carrick fundraisers, who have notched up more than 200 years of fundraising for Cancer Research UK between them, have been recognised by the charity for their tremendous efforts.
The Maybole committee has been operating since 1983. Now the charity has presented its members with special long service awards as a thank-you for their work which so far has seen them raise more than £130,000 for cancer research.
Last week, Cancer Research UK organiser Rowan Main said: "The Maybole committee deserve our congratulations for their many years of committed support and I am delighted to give them each a Long Service Award to mark their dedication and achievement.
"Four members - Janet McFadzean, Margaret Limmond, Elizabeth McQuaker and Myra Paterson – have each been fundraising for an astounding 25 years. It is thanks to dedicated volunteers like this group that Cancer Research UK is able to continue its vital research."
The charity carries out world class research into many aspects of cancer.
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month but every day in Scotland an average of 11 women are told that they have the disease.
The good news is that thanks to research, better treatments and earlier detection, more women are surviving breast cancer than ever before.
Rowan said: "Cancer Research UK dedicated over £45 million last year to research into breast cancer, from investigating its causes to finding new and better treatments.
"This vital research would not be possible without the support of people like the members of the Maybole committee and everyone in the local community who supports them."
Next event is the committee's annual coffee morning, held in Maybole Town Hall on Saturday, October 25 and open to everyone.
