WHAT'S going on over the Rainbow?
Lots of things! In particular, there are two groups which meet regularly in the Over the Rainbow offices in School Vennel, now looked after by Maybole One Stop Shop. One is the Golden Oldies Movie Club, and the other is the Carrick Men's Group.
Every two weeks, the silver screen comes to Over the Rainbow showing the classics of yesteryear, including titles like Harvey, Random Harvest and Jake.
The club, organised by Mel Balfour, of Maybole One Stop Shop, was set up in response to a number of suggestions from residents that it would be nice to be able to revisit the films – and film stars – of their youth.
Screenings are open to anyone who is retired and lives in the North Carrick area. For only £2, you can come along, get some popcorn and a drink, sit back and enjoy the show. Regular goers can pick their choice of film to be shown in the upcoming weeks, and it's a chance to meet new people, or even to meet old friends that you haven't seen for a long while.
Next showing is Donovan's Reef, on October 13, at 2pm. If you would like more information, please contact Mel or Lynne on 01655 884032.
Meanwhile, if you can hear the sounds of strumming (or noise anyway) coming from Over the Rainbow, it is likely to be Monday morning and the Carrick Men's Group will be in full swing.
The group, run by Stephen Donnelly, meets every week on a Monday morning and you can come along to learn a few chords on the guitar, or just to have a cuppa and talk about man things!
Occasionally the group will invite a guest speaker in to talk about whatever they feel is relevant, whether it be a health issue, or tips on how to cook the perfect meal. But the main focus of the group is just to have somewhere that you can go to get out of the house for a couple of hours and share some leisure time with others who feel the same. The only requirement is that you are a man!
For more information, contact Mel on 01655 884032 or turn up at the group in Over the Rainbow, any Monday between 9am and 11 am. If you are interested in learning the guitar at the group, just turn up and Colin, the group expert, will have you strumming away in no time.
