Elderly left all smiles in oral scheme

THE oral health of nursing home residents has improved thanks to an NHS Lothian scheme.

As part of the LifeSmile project, the health board wanted to improve the dental health of the elderly population in the area.

Jackie Helanor, oral health development manager for special care, said: "Care home feedback on the programme was extremely positive, and staff showed a basic understanding of oral health issues.

"The training also appeared to have raised awareness of the importance of oral health among those who attended.

"Our results demonstrate that significant improvements in supportive oral healthcare practices have been made since the launch of the LifeSmile project.

"The greatest improvement we saw was in care homes which were providing the lowest levels of support."
