Irish leader on poll high

PRIME Minister Enda Kenny is enjoying the highest approval ratings for an Irish leader in nearly a decade, despite a prolonged economic crisis, a poll in the Irish Independent newspaper has shown.

Some 65 per cent of respondents said they were satisfied with Mr Kenny's performance, a 26-point increase since he came to power in March.

It was the highest approval rating for an Irish leader since 2002, when former prime minister Bertie Ahern rode a wave of voter goodwill generated by the "Celtic Tiger" economy.
