19-year-old student Gormley was fatally stabbed in his hometown of Blantyre, South Lanarkshire, on February 1 this year.
At the city's High Court today, Maxwell admitted that, with his face masked, he pulled a knife on Mr Gormley, demanding personal items and then killed him by repeatedly striking him on the neck and body with a knife or similar instrument.
Advocate depute Dorothy Bain QC, prosecuting, told the court the plea was not accepted.
Both men, who are remanded in custody, deny a second charge of pulling a chisel on David McFall and robbing him of his wallet in Blantyre on the same day.
Judge Lord Matthews continued the case to a further preliminary hearing in August.
Mr Gormley died in Hairmyres Hospital, East Kilbride, soon after the attack. Around 1,000 people took part in a march through the streets of Blantyre in memory of the teenager.
