Subsidy farming
I READ the latest instalment of Brian Henderson’s regular litany of complaint (Farming, 13 April) about the Common Agricultural Policy and the Scottish Government’s computer system which farmers have to spend valuable time away from their fields trying to negotiate in order to extract their average six-figure annual subsidy payment.
However, it strikes me that scrapping the subsidy and the system which surrounds it would have the twin benefits of freeing up farmers to get on and farm for commercial profit, as some of them already do, rather than for subsidy payments.
It would also go some way at least towards reducing the governments’ financial deficits and black holes that seem to be troubling our politicians a lot just now. A win-win situation if ever there was one.
