Teacher 'had sex with pupil'

A RELIGIOUS studies teacher has appeared in court charged with abusing his position by having a sexual relationship with a pupil after she turned 16.

Thomas Docherty, 51, head of religious and moral education at Newbattle Community High School near Dalkeith, is now working at an admin post for Midlothian Council.

Docherty appeared at Edinburgh Sheriff Court yesterday facing two charges, his solicitor made no plea and no declaration on behalf of his client.

Father-of-three Docherty was committed for further examination and released on bail.
