Testimony 1: The abuse handed out was just beyond belief

Jan Martiz, from Fife, was at a Quarriers care home in Bridge of Weir, Renfrewshire, for 14 years.

The 56-year-old talked about how she and other residents at the homes had been subjected to constant physical and emotional abuse.

She said: "The abuse was just so widespread and it was a constant thing. It involved physical attacks, but there was lots of emotional abuse too.

"It was a real power thing and the abuse handed out to people was just beyond belief.

"It wasn't just a few isolated incidents. It was ingrained in the way the homes were run.

"That's why this report can't just be allowed to gather dust on a desk.

"Something must be done about it urgently.

"The government must do something about it straight away.

"The government and politicians should act and think how they would feel if it was their children we were talking about."
