Cricket: Win still leaves room for improvement, says Graeme Swann

England Twenty20 captain Graeme Swann admitted that there is still plenty to work to do after a convincing a six-wicket win over India ended the side’s losing run in their final tour match.

Kevin Pietersen returned from injury to fire 53 from 39 balls on the way to a man-of-the-match performance after Steve Finn returned figures of three for 22 as India were restricted to 120 for nine.

Swann said: “It’s been a very tough month for us and we’ve played some horrible cricket but it all came together tonight.

“Kevin and the seam bowlers were outstanding. Steve Finn has been the shining star for us in the past month. I brought him on and he got us a wicket. There’s not much more you can ask as captain.

“Tonight has been important to prove to ourselves that we can win over here but we have to improve.”

Pietersen, who played despite a broken thumb which he suffered last week, agreed that there were still a lot of improvements to be made despite the win.

“It was a tricky wicket,” Pietersen, pictured, said. “Fortunately I got dropped a couple of times and rode my luck this evening.

“It’s a good place to come and play as a batter and all of us have underperformed.

“This is only the second game I’ve won against India so I’m particularly pleased this evening.

“Every single one of those guys wakes up every morning looking to improve. We’ve got a management structure that drives us and pushes us. We’ve struggled in the one-dayers but I think that we’ve done well this evening.”

India captain MS Dhoni was disappointed to fall short after a 5-0 whitewash over England in the one-day series.

“I think we were about 15 runs short,” said the wicketkeeper, who was run out for 21.

“It was very slow and they used the slow ball really well. It was very difficult.

“What’s important is we have the next few days off then report to Dehli for the first Test match (against West Indies).

“I think it will be interesting and we will take it series by series.”
