Fishing: Profitable day for ladies squad at Allandale Tarn

It was fundraising time again at Allandale Tarn in Polbeth, only this time it was for the Scottish ladies international team who will compete at Bewl Water in the south of England later this year.

Conditions on arrival were far from favourable but they settled down enough for the anglers to take part. The fish were rising sporadically all over the Tarn and it looked good for all concerned. Taking a fairly good area to begin with in front of the lodge, I soon rattled a few fish but none would stick so I opted for a smaller Hothead Damsel which did the trick. The water was fairly clear despite some heavy rain and gusty winds overnight and the trout could still be spotted and targeted. It was chaotic for the first hour or so with many anglers getting their three fish limit before going on to catch and release. It soon became apparent that the fish were moving further out into open water and a longer cast was required. As the session wore on and nearly everyone had fish, the tactics changed somewhat going from a single blob on a slow retrieve and finishing up on the dries fished static.

As it was a ladies day it was only fair that a lady landed the biggest fish. While most of the prizes were claimed by men, 260 was raised to go towards the ladies' international team.
