Janowicz beats Cilic in battle of the giants
The first set unsurprisingly went to a tie-break, which Janowicz won. Emboldened by that, he forced five break points against his opponent’s imposing serve in the second set, taking two to seal a 7-6 (8/6) 6-2 win.
Home favourite and sixth seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga narrowly avoided becoming another big-name casualty, squandering a one-set lead against compatriot Julien Benneteau before finally coming through in a final-set tie-break to win 6-2 4-6 7-6 (7/2).

Hide AdThere were no worries for the other seeds in second-round action, with Japan’s Kei Nishikori winning 7-6 (7/2) 6-2 against wild card Benoit Paire and Stanislas Wawrinka, the Swiss player seeded one place below Nishikori at 16, a 6-3 6-2 winner against Carlos Berlocq.
Britain’s Jonny Marray and his Australian partner Paul Hanley reached the second round of the men’s doubles, beating German pair Philipp Kohlschreiber and Florian Mayer 7-5 6-1.
