Mhairi Spence fifth at London 2012 venue

The race for the two places on the British women's modern pentathlon team at the 2012 Olympics remains as tight as ever after a World Cup final in London yesterday.

Mhairi Spence, Heather Fell and Freyja Prentice are all ranked in the world's top 10 and have won World Cup medals this season but they could not manage a repeat at the Olympic venue in Greenwich Park.

Spence was the best of the three, finishing fifth, while Fell crossed the line in seventh and Prentice five places lower as the latest test event for the London Games came to a conclusion.

Victory, and the Olympic qualification that went with it, was claimed by Germany's reigning Games champion Lena Schoneborn ahead of Laura Asadauskaite of Lithuania and Frenchwoman Elodie Clouvel.

Scot Spencesaid: "When you start in a podium position you want to keep it but my last shoot was a little bit slow.

"I'm disappointed but I'm happy as well. It's good to have a solid performance on home soil."
