sWIMMING: Jamieson toasts a double while Gilchrist is frustrated

MICHAEL JAMIESON completed a great breaststroke double, but there was massive disappointment for his Edinburgh-born training mate Kris Gilchrist on the sixth day of the British Gas Championships in Manchester.

Glasgow-born swimmer Jamieson, who used to compete for City of Edinburgh, won the 100m on Sunday and he added the 200m title with a powerful final length that was rewarded with a personal best time of 2:10.42. It means he has now qualified in both events for the World Championships in Shanghai in August.

The 22-year-old made a breakthrough with his silver medal at the Commonwealth Games in Delhi, and he won a thrilling final from England's Andrew Willis, who took the silver medal and also qualified for the World Championships in 2:11.13. "It was nice to prove that I am the No.?1," said Jamieson. "My coaches sometimes tell me that I'm too hard on myself and I put myself under too much pressure. But I really want to get a medal this summer."

Gilchrist, the former Tynecastle High School pupil and the more experienced Scot, was devastated to miss out in third place in 2:11.43. He led at halfway but was overtaken by his two Bath training mates on the final length. "It's so frustrating to go under the time for the worlds but not make it," said the distraught 28-year-old.

In the women's 200m butterfly final, Edinburgh University's Jessica Dickons took the bronze medal in 2:10.96 behind two English swimmers, Ellen Gandy and Jemma Lowe.

Edinburgh University's Kerry Buchan, who won a bronze in the 100m event, just failed to make the podium by finishing fourth in 2:32.32 in the 200m breaststroke. Iain MacMillan, another of coach Chris Jones' Edinburgh University squad, clinched a place in tonight's 100m butterfly final.
