Thain foiled

West Linton's Fraser Thain saw his hopes of an extended run in the Boys' Amateur championship thwarted in the opening knock-out round at Barassie yesterday.

Thain, the only local player to qualify for the matchplay phase this week, went down 6 and 4 to talented American teen Michael Decker.

While Thain departed, there was better news for the remaining four Scots in the draw as they kept hopes of a home victory alive.

Liam Johnston of Dumfries, Conor O'Neil from Pollok, Scott Gibson of Southerness and Ewan Scott from St Andrews all secured victories to take them into the last 32.
